St. Johannis, church in Soltau
St. Johannis is a baroque revival church in Soltau with a tall tower that stands out against the town's skyline. The building features curved lines and ornamental details typical of baroque architecture, with interior spaces designed for worship and community gatherings.
A wooden church at this site was replaced by a stone building around 1463 and expanded in 1597. After a devastating fire on Christmas night 1906, the church was rebuilt between 1906 and 1908 in the neobaroque style, with the tower constructed between 1849 and 1850.
The church is named after Saint John, likely referring to a small baptistery that once stood behind the building. It remains a gathering place where the community meets to celebrate together and reflects the spiritual life of Soltau's residents.
The church is located on Bahnhofstrasse in the town center and is easily accessible on foot with clear visibility from the streets. The interior can be visited and is open for various services and community events.
The church tower at about 68 meters (223 feet) rises clearly above the town's rooflines and is visible from many parts of Soltau. Inside, a historic 1968 organ with a case from 1908 plays during services and special concerts.
