St. Marienkirche, Catholic church in Ludwigshafen, Germany
St. Marienkirche is a church in Ludwigshafen with a three-nave basilica featuring a wide central nave beneath a hipped roof and lower side aisles with shed roofs. The building displays expressionist characteristics and retains original interior fittings from its construction period.
The building was constructed between 1926 and 1928 following designs by Munich architect Albert Boßlet in the expressionist style. In 2007 the Greek Orthodox parish of the Annunciation acquired the building and has used it as a house of worship since then.
The bronze figures above the main portal depict Mary and the Apostles Peter and Paul, created by sculptor Hans Panzer. These works continue to define the appearance of the church facade today.
The church interior is furnished with original artworks from its opening, including a marble angel by Panzer and an Antonius relief by Carl Caire. Visitors should note that the building now functions as a Greek Orthodox church and opening hours may vary accordingly.
The work of sculptor Hans Panzer appears twice within the interior: alongside the marble angel he also created the monumental bronze figures at the main entrance. His contribution makes the church a notable example of expressionist art in the Rhine-Neckar region.
