Walchensee-Museum, Art museum in Urfeld am Walchensee, Germany
The Walchensee Museum occupies a former hotel building near the lake and displays prints, paintings, sketches, and graphic works spanning multiple decades. The collection features watercolors, pencil drawings, oil paintings, and engravings created by artists who worked in and around this region.
The museum opened on 21 July 2008, the 150th birthday of Lovis Corinth, in the former Hotel Post in Urfeld. It is a project of the Friedhelm Oriwol Foundation and covers the art and local history of the Kochelsee, Walchensee, Jachenau and Herzogstand areas. Corinth lived in his house in Urfeld from 1918 to 1925 and painted his Walchensee pictures there.
The collection reflects how artists were drawn to this lakeside location and what captured their imagination about the landscape. You can observe through the displayed works how the water, mountains, and light here influenced what painters and printmakers created.
The museum occupies the former Hotel Post in Urfeld, on the western shore of the Walchensee. The rooms hold more than 200 graphic works by Lovis Corinth alongside local-history collections, so allow time to move between the two. Urfeld and the Kesselberg road are the nearest reference points for orientation.
