Taubenstein, Alpine summit in Bavaria, Germany
Taubenstein is a mountain in Bavaria with a height of around 1,700 meters (5,577 feet) and displays impressive limestone rock formations, particularly on its north-west side. The rock face there rises steeply and provides numerous climbing routes at varying difficulty levels.
The mountain was developed as a climbing area in the early 1900s when mountaineers established the first routes on the north-west face. After years of decline, the routes underwent major restoration in the early 2000s with modern safety improvements.
The mountain has been a gathering place for climbers from across the region for decades, where they develop their skills and build community ties. The rock face accommodates various difficulty levels, drawing both newcomers and seasoned alpinists to practice their craft.
The best route is via the A8 motorway from Munich to Weyarn, then south on the B307 road. Alternatively, hourly buses serve the Fischhausen/Neuhaus station, where hikers can start their approach to the summit.
The final push to the summit involves only short scrambling and is secured by a sturdy steel cable that supports climbers in the last stretch. This makes the ascent safe and achievable even for less experienced mountaineers.
