Luftschiff

Luftschiff is an abandoned settlement on a hilltop in Thuringia near Jena. The location rises to about 405 meters and is marked by old stone walls and an ancient lime tree that identifies the historical site.

The settlement was originally called Burgrabis and developed around a manor house first recorded in 1886. After World War II, attempts were made to establish farms on the plateau before new residents returned in the 1990s.

The name reflects the location's elevation and historical connection to the local landscape. Visitors can see how residents adapted their homes to life on this exposed hilltop plateau.

The location is about 7 kilometers from Jena and accessible by unpaved roads maintained for visitors. The walk to the plateau takes time, but the open terrain provides good landmarks for orientation.

Despite its elevation and difficult conditions, three farms operated alongside the manor house at this location. This agricultural structure reveals how persistently residents managed to work this isolated plateau.
