Haus der Berge

Haus der Berge is a visitor center and museum dedicated to the natural world and geology of the Berchtesgaden National Park. The permanent exhibition Vertical Wilderness presents four distinct habitats found across different elevations and explains how plants and animals adapt to each zone.

The center relocated to its current location in 2013 after operating in a Franciscan monastery since 1988. This move allowed for a more modern exhibition space that better serves visitors interested in the park's natural systems.

The name speaks directly to the mountains that define this region and its communities. Visitors discover how the local landscape shapes the way people here see and interact with their surroundings.

The building sits in a central location in Berchtesgaden and is easily reachable on foot or by car, with parking available for visitors. Plan to spend two to three hours walking through the exhibition and trying the interactive stations.

The building features a special window with adjustable slats that frames the view of Watzmann peak directly into the exhibits. This thoughtful design links the displays inside directly with the actual mountain landscape outside.
