Witches' tower

Witches' tower, Medieval watchtower in Fulda, Germany

The Witches' Tower is a 14 meter tall round stone structure within the northern section of Fulda's historic city fortifications. The building shows the medieval defensive design that once protected the town from outside threats.

Built in the 12th century, this tower marked the boundary between the town and monastery district. Over the centuries its purpose changed, and it later served as a prison.

A plaque beside the tower honors 270 victims of witch hunts in Fulda, though those accused were actually held in the Prince-Bishop's Palace. The tower's name comes from this dark period, even though the true story is more complicated than the name suggests.

The tower serves as Station 11 on Fulda's guided audio tour through the old town. You can explore the medieval defensive architecture while learning more about the city's past.

Next to the tower stands the birthplace of Ferdinand Braun, who invented the cathode ray tube. His work was crucial for the development of television and modern electronics.
