Städtische Wessenberg-Galerie, Art museum in Constance, Germany.
The Städtische Wessenberg-Galerie is an art museum housed in a historic building near Constance Cathedral, displaying paintings, sculptures, and works across various media. The collection focuses on art from the 19th century onward, with particular emphasis on artists working in the Lake Constance region and Southwest Germany.
The museum grew from a collection assembled by Ignaz Heinrich von Wessenberg, the last prince-bishop of Constance, who gathered works throughout his lifetime. This personal collection later became an institution and continues to preserve several centuries of regional artistic heritage.
The gallery presents three collection-based exhibitions annually, focusing on art from Southwest Germany and the Lake Constance region from the 19th century to present.
The museum is centrally located in Constance and easy to reach on foot from the harbor and old town. Daytime visits work best, as natural light fills the galleries and rotating exhibitions can be viewed in full.
The building itself dates from the 19th century and has been carefully restored while preserving its original walls and rooms. Visitors can feel how the architecture frames the artworks in its galleries and becomes part of the viewing experience.
