New Synagoge, Synagogue in Essen, Germany.

The New Synagoge at Sedanstraße 46 in Essen's Südostviertel was completed in 1959 to designs by Dieter Knoblauch and Heinz Heise. The complex on a wedge-shaped plot consists of a circular, hemispherical copper-clad dome seating about 200 worshippers, joined by two single-storey wings to a three-storey community house. The dome has no windows; light enters through glass-block panels set into it. A relief of a menorah adorns the concave cross-building, and Kurt Lewy made the dome's stained-glass windows and twelve enamel-copper plaques with the symbols of the twelve tribes at the Torah shrine.

The synagogue was completed in 1959 and opened on 21 October 1959, designed by Dieter Knoblauch and Heinz Heise and largely funded by American donations. It replaced the large synagogue on Steeler Straße, badly damaged by arson during the November 1938 pogroms. The site previously held a Jewish youth centre built in 1931/1932 to plans by Erich Mendelsohn, destroyed in the same pogrom night; its foundations were rediscovered in 2025.

The dome's stained-glass windows were made by Kurt Lewy, who also created the twelve enamel-copper plates on the Torah ark showing the symbols of the twelve tribes of Israel. The building follows Erich Mendelsohn's Park Synagogue in Cleveland, and the relief of a menorah on the concave transverse building marks the entrance.

The synagogue stands at Sedanstraße 46 in Essen's Südostviertel, on a wedge-shaped plot; the main entrance is in the small transverse building in front of the copper-clad dome. The building is a listed monument since 1999 and an active congregation site, so visits depend on the community.

During construction work near the synagogue in 2025, workers uncovered the outer walls and foundations of the Jewish youth centre that stood here until 1938, along with charred remains from the Pogrom Night. Light, narrow wooden bricks from its northern facade also survived, and most of the remains were left in the ground.
