Autobahnkirche Siegerland, Motorway church near Wilnsdorf, Germany.
The Autobahnkirche Siegerland is a place of worship located along Bundesautobahn 45 near Wilnsdorf with a pure white exterior and geometric forms. Its interior features 66 wooden structural ribs made from 650 individual parts that create a tent-like space.
The building resulted from an architectural competition won by Schneider + Schumacher from Frankfurt in 2009, and opened in 2013. It represents a modern take on the motorway church movement, which creates places for travelers to pause.
The church serves as a shared space where Protestant, Free Church, and Catholic communities hold weekly rotating services. This rotating schedule reflects how the building brings together different Christian traditions in one place.
The church is open 24 hours daily and provides 240 square meters of space for reflection and quiet. Travelers on the motorway can easily access it without a major detour for a brief pause.
The wooden ribs are more than just structural elements, as they shape the entire light experience through their organic arrangement. This interplay between construction and aesthetics makes each visit visually and spatially memorable.
