Virginia-Depot, Ecological site in Lerchenau, Munich, Germany
Virginia-Depot is a biotope on former military grounds in Lerchenau where nature has spread across the old infrastructure. The area now contains different habitats with meadows, shrubs, and scattered trees around remaining structures.
The site was built between 1936 and 1940 as a German military facility and later used by the US Army as a base. After military withdrawal, it gradually transformed into a nature reserve.
The site represents a shift from military use to a nature space where residents come to observe native plants and wildlife within the city.
The site is accessible by bus, with Pulverturm station as the nearest entry point to the area. Wear sturdy footwear as the ground can become muddy after rain.
Rare plant species like grass lilies, fringed gentians, and yellow rattle have settled among the abandoned military structures. These plants thrive in the open, undisturbed spaces left behind.
