Defensionskaserne, Military barracks in Erfurt, Germany
The Defensionskaserne is a historic barracks building in Erfurt, attached directly to the city fortifications and rising two stories high. The facade facing the city is lined with numerous openings that allowed soldiers to observe and defend the surrounding area.
The building was constructed between 1828 and 1831 as part of Prussia's effort to modernize and strengthen Erfurt's fortification system. In the early 20th century it received a neo-baroque mansard roof along with further renovations.
The Defensionskaserne is an example of Prussian classical architecture, topped by a neo-baroque mansard roof added during a renovation in the early 20th century. The facade with its many openings still makes the building's original defensive purpose clearly visible from the street.
The building sits directly along the historic city walls and is easy to reach on foot from the city center. The site is currently being converted, so it is worth checking in advance which areas are open to visitors.
The building was designed from the start to combine soldiers' living quarters and defensive works within a single structure, which was rare in Prussian military architecture. This double function can still be read in the way the building is laid out today.
