Kultushafen Duisburg, Bauwerk in Deutschland
Kultushafen Duisburg is a repurposed port facility on the Rhine that once served railway and freight transport operations. The area of roughly 7,500 square meters is being developed into a gathering space with new water access, featuring an accessible ramp, stone seating areas arranged in bands, and a large waterfront terrace.
The facility was established around 1874 as a ferry and railway port by the Rhenish Railway Company, connecting Hochfeld and Rheinhausen across the river. It represents the era when ferries and later the city's first railway bridge made this stretch of the Rhine a vital transportation corridor.
The Kultushafen holds meaning for local residents as a place where industrial and transport history is still visible in the landscape. The site carries memories of railway and river freight activity that shaped daily life for generations in this area.
The site is open to the public and located in the southern part of RheinPark near the border between Hochfeld and Wanheimerort neighborhoods. The new accessible ramp provides barrier-free access to the water for all visitors to explore the harbor and enjoy the riverside setting.
A planned transformation involves converting the harbor basin into a sandy beach with yacht harbor facilities, shifting this place from an industrial remnant into an active recreation area by the water. The historic railway bridge remains nearby as a silent witness to the site's former transportation role.
