Waldfriedhof Duisburg, Cultural heritage cemetery in Duisburg, Germany
Waldfriedhof Duisburg is a large burial ground set within forested surroundings, with over 50 kilometers of paths that wind through varied landscaped sections and wooded areas. The grounds extend across approximately 67 hectares and are planted with around 6000 trees, including century-old beech and oak specimens.
This burial ground was founded in the early 1920s following the architectural designs of Herman Bräuhäuser, giving the landscape its characteristic form during that period. A crematorium was added in 1932, and a military cemetery for fallen soldiers was established in the southern area in 1939.
The grounds hold separate burial areas for Jewish, Greek Orthodox, and Muslim communities, each occupying distinct sections within the landscape. These adjacent spaces reflect the diversity of Duisburg's residents and how different traditions share this place.
This place is extensive, so visitors should wear comfortable shoes and allow time to walk around the grounds. The many trees offer shade and shelter, with a main path that is easy to follow, though the side paths are worth exploring at your own pace.
Some of the oldest gravestones on the grounds date back to 1924, predating the major expansions that followed. These early markers tell the story of the first burials at this location and serve as a historical anchor for the place.
