Tiger and Turtle – Magic Mountain, Steel walking sculpture in Angerpark, Duisburg, Germany
Tiger and Turtle is a walkable light sculpture made of stainless steel on a hilltop in Angerpark that resembles the track of a roller coaster. The entire walkway spans 249 meters and rises about 21 meters (roughly 70 feet) above ground at its highest point, with metal stairs and railings that let you explore almost the full course on foot.
Artists Heike Mutter and Ulrich Genth designed the sculpture in 2011 as part of a project that turned former industrial sites in the Ruhr area into public recreation zones. The location on a mining spoil heap underscores the shift from coal extraction to leisure and art in the Duisburg region.
This walkable artwork connects the region's steelmaking past with contemporary outdoor art and opens a new way to experience the post-industrial landscape. Locals often walk the track during daylight or after dark when integrated LED lights illuminate the entire structure and make the coiling form visible across the valley.
You can enter through stairs and ramps without paying a fee and the full walk takes about 30 to 45 minutes, offering wide views across Duisburg and the Rhine when weather is clear. The path can become slippery when wet or icy, so wear sturdy shoes and take extra care in uncertain conditions.
One section forms a vertical loop that remains closed to visitors for safety reasons and only completes the optical illusion of a continuous roller coaster. At night roughly 880 LED lights trace the curved form and make the structure visible from afar, while by day it tends to blend into the surroundings.
