Rheinaue Friemersheim, Protected nature reserve along Rhine River in Duisburg, Germany
Rheinaue Friemersheim is a nature reserve featuring meadows, hedgerows, and fruit orchards spread across the Rhine's natural floodplain. The landscape shows the rolling terrain typical of the lower Rhine region, with seasonal changes that transform the environment throughout the year.
The reserve gained protection in 1979 and expanded significantly in 1991 when Duisburg purchased the land from the Krupp industrial company. This acquisition preserved a valuable river landscape that otherwise might have faced development.
Traditional fruit orchards fill the landscape with old apple varieties that have grown here for generations. Visitors can walk among these trees and experience how local agriculture once shaped the entire Rhine region.
A dike path runs alongside the Rhine and is suitable for walking and cycling at your own pace. Spring and summer are ideal times to visit when wildlife is most active and the landscape is fully green.
A former river channel called 'Roos' lies within the reserve and reconnects with the main Rhine during seasonal flooding. This temporary water system creates a dynamic landscape that few visitors expect to see.
