Belsenplatz, Traffic intersection in Oberkassel, Düsseldorf, Germany
Belsenplatz is a triangular traffic intersection in western Oberkassel where several tram and bus lines meet at a central hub. The square sits surrounded by residential buildings and opens toward an adjacent green space.
The square came into being in 1898 when the Rhine Railway Station relocated to this spot and the Oberkassel Bridge opened across the river. This bridge connection shaped how the neighborhood would grow and remain connected to the rest of the city.
The former station building now houses a traditional brewery where locals gather to drink Altbier and enjoy regional food. It remains a meeting place where the neighborhood's social life continues much as it did generations ago.
The square is well served by public transport with multiple tram and bus stops positioned around its edges. Walking through the area is straightforward, and it connects easily to other parts of the neighborhood.
The Belsenpark next door was built in 2017 on what used to be freight railway yards and now offers green space for walks and relaxation. Few people realize this park stands where trains once loaded and unloaded cargo for the whole region.
