Dommuseum Ottonianum Magdeburg, Museum building near Cathedral Square, Magdeburg, Germany
The Dommuseum Ottonianum occupies a former Reichsbank building across from the Cathedral, focusing on medieval history and discoveries. The exhibition displays findings from archaeological excavations and personal objects from the era of Emperor Otto and his family.
The museum opened in 2018 based on findings from extensive excavations conducted between 2001 and 2010 at the Cathedral. These archaeological digs uncovered important artifacts and remains connected to the early imperial period.
The name honors Emperor Otto the Great, who shaped the city in the 10th century and left a lasting mark on its identity. You sense his importance through the objects on display and understand how his era molded the entire region.
The museum sits directly across from the Cathedral at Cathedral Square and is easy to reach on foot. It is worth allowing time to view the different exhibition sections and examine the displayed objects without rushing.
The museum features an interactive digital model of the Cathedral that shows its different construction phases in detail. Visitors can see how the building gradually developed and changed throughout the medieval period.
