Windweheniederung, Nature reserve in Bielefeld, Germany
The Windweheniederung is a protected nature reserve near Bielefeld covering about 30 hectares of land. It contains multiple habitat types arranged along the Windwehe River and the streams that flow into it.
The area received legal protection as a nature reserve starting in 1991 and expanded in 2005. This growth reflected growing concern about protecting more natural spaces in the region.
The Windwehe River holds meaning in the regional identity and appears in local heraldry, showing how important waterways are to communities here. People have long recognized the value of this flowing water in shaping where and how they live.
The reserve is accessible through designated entry points even though it sits between major roads including the L751 highway and the A2 motorway. These access areas allow you to move through the protected space without having to cross the busier routes.
A section of the Fettpottbach stream, the upper flow of the Windwehe River, was restored to its natural condition in 2009. This work was done to meet European standards for water quality and habitat diversity.
