Post office building, 19th-century mail building in Schwerin, Germany
The Hauptpost is a seven-story building with an octagonal domed clock tower and Baroque-style gabled projections across its facade. It houses postal services, event spaces, and offices under one roof and significantly shapes the appearance of the city square.
The building was constructed between 1892 and 1897 under architect Ernst Hake's direction and replaced a former Bishop's residence from the 14th century. This transformation marked a shift from religious to state authority in the late 19th century.
The building displays a mix of Neorenaissance and Baroque elements that were typical of important public structures in the German Reich. These architectural features continue to shape the appearance of the city square today and show how authority and order were expressed through stone.
The building stands on Mecklenburgstraße in Schwerin's old town district and is easily reached on foot. Visitors can view the facade and tower from outside, while the interior remains active with various uses.
The radio station Landessender Schwerin began broadcasting from this building on December 24, 1945. This made the postal building an important location in post-war communication history.
