Hanseaten-Kaserne, Military barracks in Lübeck, Germany
Hanseaten-Kaserne is a former military barracks in Lübeck, made up of several brick buildings arranged across a large open site. The complex includes accommodation blocks, administrative buildings, and service areas that once supported day-to-day military operations.
The barracks were built in the 1930s and used as a military base during the Second World War. After 1945, British forces took control of the site before it was eventually returned to German administration.
The brick buildings follow the plain architectural style common to German military construction of the 1930s, with symmetrical facades and wide open courtyards. Today the site is used by local residents as a place for everyday outdoor activity.
The site is open to the public and easy to explore on foot, with enough open space to move around comfortably. Visiting during the day gives the best view of the buildings and the overall layout of the grounds.
In the years after the war, the site housed refugees at the same time as it was being used to help establish the new German armed forces. This overlap happened on the same grounds where a foreign military had only recently been stationed.
