Silbermühle, Smock mill in Norden, Germany.
Silbermühle is a smock mill with a square base supporting an octagonal structure topped with a rotating cap and gallery. This design allowed the upper section to turn into the wind for optimal grain processing.
Built in 1894, the mill operated until 1969 as one of fourteen windmills serving the local agricultural community. Its closure marked the end of an era when grain milling was essential to the town's economy.
After closing as a mill, the building became a restaurant in the 1970s and later a nightclub called Alte Mühle. This transformation shows how locals adapted the structure into a gathering place for their community.
The structure was located at Königsberger Straße in the Neustadt district until 2022, when demolition occurred despite community opposition. A fire in 2018 had already caused significant damage to the building.
The building underwent multiple transformations from a working mill to a restaurant and later a nightclub. These varied uses show how structures gain new purposes when their original function becomes obsolete.
