St. Nikolaus-Bildstock, Religious wayside shrine in Heidelberg, Germany.
St. Nikolaus-Bildstock is a sandstone wayside shrine featuring a statue of Saint Nicholas in bishop's vestments with a miter and crosier, protected by metal bars. The monument stands approximately 2.8 meters tall near the Three Oaks parking area.
City forester Leonardo Schreiber built this shrine in 1747 after surviving a lightning strike at the Three Oaks location. The current statue dates from 1950, commissioned by a returning soldier who had been held captive in the Soviet Union.
The shrine reflects ongoing devotion to Saint Nicholas in the local community. Visitors decorate the statue with candles and flowers each December 6th, showing how the place remains meaningful to people in the area.
The shrine is located at a parking area and can be reached on foot or by regular bus service throughout the day. The site is straightforward to visit and requires no special preparation.
The original statue was damaged and lost before the current replacement was created. This renewal shows how important the site remained to the community, even after significant loss.
