Zeughaus Weimar

Zeughaus Weimar is a former weapons storehouse with a distinctive layout of four large wings surrounding an inner courtyard. It now displays collections documenting German history from medieval times to the present day.

The structure was built in 1706 as an arsenal for local military use and shaped the city's appearance for centuries. Following major destruction during World War II, reconstruction began in 1949 and the building gradually transformed into a history museum.

The building has become a place where visitors encounter stories spanning different periods of German life, from ordinary people to major institutions. The exhibitions help people understand how German society and power evolved over time.

The museum displays objects and photographs organized chronologically, allowing visitors to trace connections across different historical periods. Guided tours through the collections help visitors understand historical context more clearly.

The classical building was extended in 2003 with a modern glass structure designed by the architect behind the Louvre pyramid addition. This blend of historic masonry and contemporary design creates an intriguing contrast at the site.
