Watzmann-Ostwand-Hütte, Mountain shelter in Berchtesgaden National Park, Germany.
Watzmann-Ostwand-Hütte is a mountain shelter located at 623 meters (2,044 feet) near Lake Königssee, built to serve climbers tackling the eastern wall of Mount Watzmann. The facility provides 24 sleeping spaces, cold running water, and basic outdoor toilets for visitors preparing for their alpine ascent.
The shelter was established by the Berchtesgaden section of the German Alpine Club to support mountaineers attempting the 1,800-meter (5,906 feet) eastern face of Mount Watzmann. Its creation reflected the growing climbing movement of the 20th century, when safe refuge points became essential for alpine expeditions.
The shelter brings together climbers from around the world who share a passion for alpine challenges and embrace the tradition of mountain independence. Visitors experience a sense of camaraderie among people preparing for the same demanding climb.
The shelter opens from June through October and is reached primarily by boat transport to St. Bartholomä from Lake Königssee. Visitors should prepare for basic conditions and bring their own food supplies, as facilities for provisions are limited at this remote location.
Guests receive a door code after payment to access the shelter independently, as no staff members are present at this remote location. This arrangement turns a night here into a lesson in self-reliance, where climbers must handle every task on their own.
