Akatsi College of Education, School of Pedagogy in Akatsi, Ghana
Akatsi College of Education is a teacher training institution in the Volta Region of Ghana, where students prepare to become educators in Ghanaian primary schools. The campus includes classrooms, study spaces, and shared facilities that form the backbone of daily teaching and learning.
The college opened in October 1963 with 42 male students and four instructors, using buildings that had previously belonged to the construction company Taylor Woodrow. It was one of the first steps toward building teacher training capacity in the Volta Region.
Students at Akatsi College are taught in Ewe, English, and French, reflecting the everyday language reality of the Volta Region. This approach prepares future teachers to work in communities where more than one language is spoken in and around the classroom.
The campus is located in the town of Akatsi and is generally accessible during regular teaching periods. Visiting outside exam season gives a better sense of everyday campus life and student activity.
When the college opened in 1963, it was Mrs. De Souza who prepared the first meal for students who had traveled from distant regions to join the founding group. This detail has stayed in the memory of the institution and is still occasionally mentioned by those who know its early history.
