Lomé Grand Market, Central marketplace in Lomé, Togo.
Lomé Grand Market is a large marketplace in Togo that is divided into three separate trading zones offering different types of goods and products. The space is filled with spices, textiles, fresh produce, and everyday items available for purchase throughout the different sections.
The market began during the colonial period and gradually became a major trading hub for local goods and products. A major fire in 2013 destroyed much of the original structure, prompting significant rebuilding efforts that continued until 2017.
Female vendors known as 'nana benz' have shaped this place for generations, buying and selling fabrics and spices that define the local economy. You will see their business extending beyond simple trading into a form of community leadership that touches daily life throughout the city.
The best time to shop is in the morning when selection is widest and crowds are lighter. The marketplace can be tight and warm, so wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water with you.
The market sits right next to the Sacred Heart Cathedral, creating an interesting meeting of religious and commercial life side by side. This spatial arrangement shows how both elements remain connected in the city's everyday rhythm.

Togo extends from the coast of the Gulf of Guinea to forested plateaus inland. The country contains several national parks, including Fazao Malfakassa and Keran, where elephants, antelopes, and numerous bird species live. The waterfalls at Aklowa and Kpimé cascade over multiple tiers through tropical vegetation. The Koutammakou region in the northeast displays traditional clay architecture with characteristic Tatas, fortified dwellings of the Batammariba people. In Lomé, German and French colonial buildings reflect the history of the 19th and 20th centuries, while local markets like the Marché des Féticheurs present traditional practices and commerce. Mount Agou rises to 986 meters and provides views across surrounding valleys and plantations. The coastal area includes sandy beaches along the Atlantic and Lac Togo, a lagoon used for fishing and water activities. Temple ruins and shrines are distributed throughout the country, documenting the animist traditions of various ethnic groups.
