Alte Landungsbrücke, Colonial maritime structure in Lomé, Togo
The Alte Landungsbrücke in Lomé is a metal harbor structure that extends approximately 360 meters into the sea and consists of two functional sections. The structure served both for cargo handling and the transport of passengers along the coast.
The structure was begun in 1899 under German colonial rule and was completely finished by 1904. Its construction marked a significant moment in maritime infrastructure development in West Africa during the colonial period.
The structure shows the connection between German engineering and local Togolese craftsmanship, as African workers participated in its construction. This collaboration shaped how the building was made and what it represents to people today.
The bridge remains are located opposite Boulevard de la Marina and are easily accessible from the shore. Visitors should note that the structure extends into the water and offers different views depending on the tide level.
The structure was equipped with a rail system that allowed train wagons to carry goods directly from ships to their final destination. This integrated transport system was remarkably innovative for its time.
