Achelous River, River system in Epirus, Greece.

The Achelous is a major river system that originates in Mount Pindus and flows for over 200 kilometers through three regions before reaching the Ionian Sea. It forms boundaries between different administrative areas and has several tributaries joining its course.

In ancient times, it served as a natural boundary and was Greece's largest waterway, separating the Dolopian and Agraean territories from southern regions. Major construction projects in the 1900s altered its course and harnessed its power for electricity generation.

The river appears throughout ancient stories as a powerful figure controlling waters and dividing lands, and these old connections shaped how local communities view and relate to it today. Local names and traditions reflect this long-standing presence in regional identity.

The area is accessible from several points where roads run alongside the river, particularly in inhabited areas near adjacent towns and villages. The warmer months offer the most pleasant conditions for visiting, though water levels and weather can affect how easily you can approach different sections.

The waters have a striking yellowish-white color due to high sediment content, which gave rise to an alternate name, Aspropotamo, meaning White River in Greek. This color makes it instantly recognizable when compared to other Greek waterways.
