Isthmia

Isthmia is an archaeological site in Corinthia featuring the remains of a temple dedicated to Poseidon, Roman bath buildings, and a stadium used for ancient competitions. The structures are spread across the site at different elevations, revealing construction phases that span centuries of use.

The sanctuary of Poseidon at Isthmia became a major center for athletic games in ancient times, hosting competitions that drew participants from across Greece. The site experienced several building phases over centuries as successive cultures modified and expanded the facilities.

The archaeological museum displays artifacts from excavations, including pottery, sculptures, and inscriptions that reveal details about ancient Greek religious practices.

The site can be explored on foot, with paths connecting the different areas like the temple, baths, and stadium. Bring water and wear sun protection, especially during warmer months, as there is limited shade across the grounds.

Excavations since 1952 by Michigan State University have uncovered two separate stadium structures used for different periods of the Isthmian Games.
