Lycosura, Archaeological site in Arcadia, Greece
Lycosura is an ancient sanctuary in the mountainous landscape of Arcadia with a Doric temple, several stone altars, and a covered colonnade. The site displays the typical layout of a Greek temple complex with spaces dedicated to religious ceremonies and worship.
The sanctuary was established in the fourth century BCE as a worship center for a local deity. Archaeologists began systematic excavations in the late 19th century, revealing important structures and artifacts from the site.
The temple was dedicated to the goddess Despoina and attracted pilgrims who participated in secret rituals. Worship of this goddess was deeply rooted in this region and differed from other sanctuaries across Greece.
The site is located in the mountains and accessible via rural roads, making sturdy footwear advisable. A small museum on the grounds displays finds and helps visitors better understand the remains.
The sanctuary had a side entrance specifically designed for private rituals and initiatory ceremonies. This shows that not all parts of the temple were intended for public worship.
