Moni Varlaam

The monastery stands atop a vertical rock formation, with the main church featuring two domes and stone walls constructed in traditional Athonite architecture.

Two brothers, Theophanes and Nektarios Apsarades, established the monastery in 1517 after finding the abandoned rock where hermit Varlaam once lived in 1350.

The monastery holds 300 manuscripts and contains frescoes from 1548 by painter Frango Katelano, depicting religious scenes including Christ, Virgin Mary, and biblical narratives.

Visitors must wear appropriate clothing, with women required to wear skirts, and access to the monastery involves climbing numerous steps carved into the rock.

The initial construction of the main church required 22 years to transport materials to the summit, yet the actual building process took only 20 days.
