Moni Rousanou, Orthodox monastery on rock pinnacle in Meteora, Greece
Moni Rousanou is a monastery on a rock ridge in Meteora that occupies an entire rock platform. The three-story structure houses the Church of Transfiguration as well as several monk cells.
The monastery was founded in 1288 by two brothers from Ioannina. During the 16th century it underwent significant expansion and received new religious decoration.
The main church displays frescoes from the 16th century showing scenes from Christian tradition. Visitors can see these religious artworks that shape the daily prayer life of the community.
A bridge built in 1930 allows access to the monastery from outside. Visitors should expect narrow pathways and steep stairs and should wear appropriate clothing.
The monastery was converted from a male community to a convent in 1988 and is now home to about 15 nuns. This transformation shows how life in this location has changed over the centuries.
