Surloti, Rock formation in Kalabaka, Greece.
Surloti is a rock formation rising about 600 meters at the Meteora complex, featuring steep cliff faces and natural sandstone pillars in northern Greece. The formation displays multiple jagged peaks and crevices that create a dramatic and varied landscape.
This formation became a central part of Meteora starting in the 14th century, when Orthodox monks built monasteries on similar peaks across the region. That period marked the start of a monastic movement that transformed these isolated rocks into religious centers.
The Monastery of St. Eustratius sits atop this rock, showing how religious communities built their spaces within the natural landscape. The monks chose this isolated location for spiritual practice and protection.
Climbers on this formation can use established routes with fixed anchors available at various difficulty levels. Visitors can best view it from lookout points in Kastraki or walk along the paths that circle the base.
From its position on the southern side of the valley, this rock offers direct views toward the Holy Spirit Rock and the flowing Pineios River beyond. This sight line connects multiple highlights of the Meteora landscape within a single perspective.
