Holy Monastery

Holy Monastery perches atop towering sandstone pillars above Kalabaka, its buildings integrated directly into the rock formations that support them. The complex features interconnected rooms and passages carved through and built onto the stone columns rising from the valley floor.

Monks established this community on the rock formations starting in the 14th century, and the site eventually supported around 24 monasteries at its peak. Building on isolated stone pillars provided both protection and isolation ideal for spiritual practice.

The monastery keeps Eastern Orthodox traditions alive through daily practices visible in how monks and nuns organize their lives and spaces within these rock-top communities.

Visitors need to wear long trousers or skirts and cover their shoulders before entering the buildings, as dress codes are strictly observed here. Comfortable walking shoes are essential since the site involves climbing steep steps and navigating narrow passages between the rock pillars.

Monks originally reached this isolated site using removable ladders and rope systems that they would pull up for security purposes. This access method allowed them to control who entered and maintain their sanctuary undisturbed.
