Angelitos Athena, Marble statue in Acropolis Museum, Greece.

Angelitos Athena is a marble sculpture standing about 0.9 meters tall, depicting the goddess in archaic dress with an aegis decorated by a gorgon head across the chest. The work shows the artistic style and technical skill of the early classical period.

This marble work was created between 480 and 470 BCE and represents one of the earliest known depictions of an armed Athena following the Persian Wars. The sculpture documents cultural shifts and the rising importance of the goddess in Athenian society after this major conflict.

The inscription reveals that Angelitos dedicated this work as an offering to the goddess, reflecting how ordinary citizens honored their divine protector. Such personal dedications were common acts of devotion in the ancient world.

The statue is located in the Archaic Acropolis Gallery of the Acropolis Museum and is accessible through the main exhibition route. Visitors will find it in a dedicated display area alongside other archaic works from the same period.

The statue originally stood upon a Doric column bearing inscriptions from both Angelitos the dedicator and Euenor the sculptor. These inscriptions now provide valuable evidence of artistic and social practices in ancient Athenian society.
