Chelmos Observatory, Astronomical observatory on Mount Chelmos, Greece

Chelmos Observatory is an astronomical facility located on the Neraidorachi peak at 2,330 meters elevation in southern Greece's mountains. It houses a large telescope manufactured by Carl Zeiss and is used for scientific research and educational activities.

The facility was constructed in 2001 and began operations shortly after with support from universities in Patras and Manchester. It developed into an important center for Greek astronomical research in the country's mountain regions.

The site serves as a center for scientific research and learning, drawing visitors who want to understand the night sky and observe stars directly. Local schools and groups visit to experience astronomy firsthand and connect with the work happening at the peak.

Access requires a four-wheel drive vehicle because the route to this high-altitude site goes over rough mountain roads. Plan extra time for the climb and be prepared for mountainous terrain and variable weather conditions at this elevation.

A plaque at the entrance honors astrophysicist Emilios Charlavtis, who died in an avalanche before the facility was finished. The memorial captures a poignant connection between the scientist and this mountain research center.
