Cave of the Lakes

Cave of the Lakes is a show cave with three distinct levels containing 13 sequential underground lakes connected by narrow passages. The walls are decorated with mineral deposits and stalactites that reflect the light from illuminated pathways throughout the cave system.

Archaeological excavations revealed that humans occupied this site from the Neolithic Age through the Late Bronze Age, leaving traces across multiple periods. The findings show a long history of habitation and use within the underground chambers over thousands of years.

Local legends connect this place to the mythological healer Melampus, who supposedly treated patients within its chambers in ancient times. This story has shaped how people understand and visit the site, blending mythology with the natural wonder itself.

The cave maintains a constant temperature around 18 degrees Celsius (64 Fahrenheit) year-round, so bringing an extra layer is wise even on warm days outside. The pathways are lit and follow the natural terrain, making sturdy footwear with good grip essential for navigating the roughly 45-minute guided tour.

The site transforms dramatically with the seasons: in winter, melting snow creates an underground river system complete with waterfalls flowing through the chambers. In summer, the same water settles into 13 separate still lakes, revealing a completely different landscape.
