Yrtakina, Archaeological site on Kastri hill in Temenia, Greece.

Yrtakina is an ancient settlement located on a rocky hilltop near Temenia at about 900 meters elevation, fortified with two concentric defensive walls. The site spreads across the uneven terrain with slopes that contain evidence of structures, sanctuaries, and burial grounds from antiquity.

The settlement flourished during the Hellenistic period and formed a political alliance with the nearby city of Lissos. This partnership led to the creation of a regional federation that gave mountain communities greater influence in the ancient world.

The settlement served as a refuge for shepherds in ancient times, as shown by the sanctuary dedicated to Pan, the protector of flocks and herds. The community's devotion to this deity reflects how central pastoral life was to their identity and daily work.

To reach the site, follow the marked track from Temenia village, which climbs steadily uphill over about 2 kilometers. Wear good hiking shoes and bring water, as the terrain is rocky and exposed to the elements at this elevation.

The hillside slopes contain carved tombs hewn directly into the rock, ranging from simple box shapes to more complex chamber designs. These burial monuments reveal details about how the ancient community treated their dead and the variety of social ranks among them.
