Fortress St. George, Medieval fort in Kastro Kefalonia, Greece
The Fortress St. George occupies 16 acres on a 320-meter hilltop, featuring stone walls that extend for 600 meters around its perimeter point.
Built in the 12th century by Byzantine emperors, the fortress served as the capital of Kefalonia until 1757 and underwent major modifications by Venetian rulers.
The Evaggelistria church within the fortress walls displays Ionian Baroque architecture and houses a collection of Byzantine religious icons from former temples.
The fortress entrance requires a small admission fee, and visitors should plan their trips before 15:30 when the site typically closes to the public.
Historical records mention an undiscovered underground tunnel system that supposedly connected the fortress directly to the city of Argostoli.
