Paralio Astros Castle, Castle in Paralio Astros, Greece

Paralio Astros Castle is a stone fortress on a small hill by the sea in Paralio Astros, Greece, with thick walls, narrow openings, and a rectangular shape that still shows its old defensive purpose. Around it, broken rooms and a large gate open onto views that stretch far over the water and the coast below.

The castle was built in 1256 by Gillaume de Villardhuin as a residence for the Venetian governor, and it was later called Castello della Estella because the headland looked like a star from above. Under Ottoman control it was turned into a stronger fortress, and in 1826 Greek fighters used it to hold off Egyptian troops during the revolution.

The hilltop layout gives the place the feel of an old lookout post, and locals still point to it as the spot where the coast was once watched for approaching ships. Inside the outer walls, the remains of two houses, linked to the Zafeiropoulos family, show how the enclosure mixed everyday life with defense before the Greek revolution.

The ground can be uneven, so shoes with good grip help when walking among the old stones. A visit is easier during the mild hours of morning or late afternoon, when the paths are cooler and the light makes the ruins and the sea easier to read.

One part of the site that many people miss is how the old gun holes were later blocked or changed, a small trace of how defenses kept being adjusted over the years. This shows that the fortress was not frozen in time but remade again and again by the people who needed it.
