Vikos Gorge

Vikos Gorge is a deep rocky chasm that runs for about 12 kilometers through limestone formations. The ravine narrows and widens as it cuts through the landscape, with depths reaching around 900 meters.

The gorge took shape over millions of years as flowing water gradually carved through the rock. A river system worked continuously to hollow out this deep valley from the surrounding mountain.

The surrounding mountain villages show how people have lived and built here for centuries using local stone and simple methods. You can see traditional houses and old meeting places that are still part of daily village life.

The best way to explore the gorge is on foot, starting from nearby villages. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable hiking conditions, with mild weather and clear trails.

The gorge is notable for its unusual ratio of depth to width, making it stand out among similar formations worldwide. The canyon supports an extraordinary range of plant life and rare bird species.
