Akova Castle

Akova Castle is a medieval stone fortress sitting atop a steep hill with natural defenses on three sides, commanding views of Arcadia's mountainous terrain. The structure is built upon the foundations of an ancient acropolis, integrating the earlier site into its position.

After the Fourth Crusade, the fortress became the center of the Barony of Akova within the Frankish Principality of Achaea, holding significant regional authority. Its rise reflects the political shifts that shaped medieval Greece.

The fortress remains tied to Vyziki village below, whose residents preserve connections to the medieval period through local traditions and gatherings. These events happen regularly near the old walls, keeping the place woven into daily community life.

Reaching the fortress requires hiking up a rocky path, so sturdy shoes and plenty of water are essential for the visit. The cooler hours of early morning or late afternoon work best for the climb.

The castle's foundations rest on an ancient acropolis that researchers believe could be the historical site of Teuthis. This layering of periods makes the site hold traces of multiple eras in one location.
