Δρυοδάσος Φολόης, Oak forest in Ilia region, Greece
Foloi oak forest is a large woodland covering flat terrain at the southwestern foothills of Mount Erymanthos, composed mainly of tall straight-trunked oak trees. The area is crisscrossed by several hiking trails and forest roads that make it accessible to visitors.
The forest takes its name from Greek mythology, referring to Pholus, a centaur king who ruled this ancient woodland territory. This mythological connection is deeply rooted in the local identity and defines the place's heritage.
Local communities use the forest for traditional sheep herding and beekeeping, with honey sourced from oak blossoms found throughout the woodland. People here have shaped their way of life around this landscape and continue to work within it daily.
Visitors can hike on several marked trails and forest roads, with some routes being easy to follow while others require more stamina. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as walks can be time-consuming.
This woodland is one of the few in Europe composed of naturally grown oaks rather than planted trees. The forest receives strict protection as part of a broader European conservation network.
