Monastery of Kleivokas, Orthodox monastery in Gortynia Municipality, Greece
The Monastery of Kleivokas is an Orthodox religious site in the mountainous Gortynia Municipality, situated at the entrance of a narrow cave on steep rocks. The structure makes use of the natural rock formation and sits close to the village of Kontovazaina.
The monastery was founded in the 16th century as a religious site in this mountainous area. Over the centuries, many reports of apparitions of the Virgin Mary were documented there, making it a place of devotion.
The monastery follows traditional Orthodox mountain architecture of the Peloponnese, with whitewashed walls and simple forms that blend into the rocky landscape.
The site is quite remote and will soon be accessible via a new hiking route called the Path of Hercules, which connects the villages of Spatheri and Kontovazaina. This trail will make it easier to explore the steep rock formation and surrounding area.
The cave beside the monastery extends deeper into the mountain, but many passages remain unexplored due to their narrow width and difficult access. This mystery adds intrigue for those seeking adventure.
