First Cemetery of Athens, Cemetery in central Athens, Greece

The cemetery extends across 225,000 square meters with marble monuments, neoclassical tombs, sculptures, and three churches surrounded by pine and cypress trees.

Founded in 1837 after Athens' liberation from Ottoman rule, this burial ground emerged from regulations prohibiting interments within city church grounds.

The monuments display works from Tinos island craftsmen who carved Pentelic marble into detailed sculptures, including the notable Sleeping Maiden by Yannoulis Chalepas.

Located behind the Temple of Olympian Zeus at Anapafseos Street, the cemetery welcomes visitors daily from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

Heinrich Schliemann, Melina Mercouri, and Nobel laureate Odysseas Elytis rest among 12,000 graves in designated sections for different religious communities.
