Lion Gate, Monumental gate in Mycenae, Greece.
The Lion Gate features four monolithic stones crowned by a limestone relief depicting two lions flanking a central column on the entrance structure.
Built around 1250 BCE, this main entrance to the Mycenaean citadel represents a primary example of Bronze Age defensive architecture.
The lion relief constitutes the largest preserved sculptural ensemble from the Mycenaean period, demonstrating the technical abilities of period craftsmen.
Visitors reach the gate through a modified natural ramp leading to the entrance, where a rectangular bastion forms a 14-meter entrance court.
The monolithic lintel of the gate, weighing 52 tons and measuring 4.5 meters, demonstrates the construction expertise of this civilization.
