Μέγαρο Μετοχικού Ταμείου Στρατού, Art Deco building in central Athens, Greece.
The Military Pension Fund Building is an Art Deco structure occupying an entire city block between Panepistimiou, Voukourestiou, Stadiou, and Amerikis streets in central Athens. The building extends across six floors and three underground levels, now containing the Attica department store and various commercial establishments.
Construction began in 1927 on the former site of royal stables, following a competition won by architects Vassileios Kassandras and Leonidas Bonis. The building was shaped during its construction phase with changes that determined its modern appearance and function today.
The building contains the Pallas Theater and the Spyros Milios Arcade, featuring a glass roof and traditional pastry shops that remain part of daily life for Athenians. These spaces serve as gathering places where people experience culture and enjoy time-honored products together.
The building is most easily explored by walking through the public arcades and atrium areas, which offer free access to visitors. Multiple levels are connected via stairs and elevators, making it accessible for people with varying mobility needs.
During foundation excavation, archaeologists discovered sections of ancient Athens' eastern defensive wall and a geometric period cemetery beneath the building site. These archaeological findings reveal the layered history hidden beneath this modern structure.
