Canigó

Canigó is a mountain peak in the French Pyrenees rising to 2,784 meters with steep slopes and rocky upper sections. The summit is reached by well-marked trails that approach from different directions and vary in difficulty.

In the Middle Ages, the mountain served as a strategic lookout point for monitoring movement between France and Spain across the Pyrenean passes. Its elevated position made it important for controlling these cross-border routes.

The mountain holds deep meaning for local people, especially during the summer solstice when residents climb with torches and light a fire at the peak. This practice connects generations and shows how central this place is to the region's sense of identity.

The ascent is strenuous on warm days and requires good preparation and proper gear for extended hiking. Starting early in the morning is wise to ensure enough daylight and to avoid afternoon weather changes.

The peak maintains snow cover into late spring, remaining visible from distances over 100 kilometers across the Mediterranean Sea. This visibility from such great distances has made it a longtime reference point for travelers and seafarers.
