During the Middle Ages, the mountain served as a strategic observation point for monitoring movement between France and Spain through the Pyrenean passes.
Local residents celebrate the summer solstice by carrying torches up the mountain and lighting a fire at its summit, continuing a centuries-old tradition.
The ascent from Vernet-les-Bains follows a marked trail covering 34 kilometers with an elevation gain of 2200 meters, requiring 7 to 10 hours to complete.
The mountain maintains its snow cover until late spring, making it visible from distances up to 200 kilometers away across the Mediterranean Sea.
