Corte, Administrative division in Corsica, France
The arrondissement of Corte covers 2,853 square kilometers in northern Corsica and includes 158 communes within the Haute-Corse department. This administrative division links coastal areas with mountain regions in the island interior.
After the French Revolution the region became part of the Golo department in 1800 before moving under Haute-Corse administration in 1976. This restructuring reflects the evolution of Corsican administrative organization over two centuries.
The University of Corsica Pascal Paoli takes its name from a Corsican independence leader and offers programs taught in the Corsican language. Students from across the Mediterranean region come here to study island culture and regional history.
The D69 highway links the area to major destinations across the island with Bastia Airport about 80 kilometers (50 miles) away. Visitors traveling through the territory should plan for mountain roads and longer driving times.
In 2010 the arrondissement expanded by absorbing four cantons from the Bastia jurisdiction including Alto-di-Casaconi and Vescovato. This change significantly increased both the area and population of the administrative unit.
